My fellow Democrats in Portland,
As you know, I recently announced that I was stepping down from my position as chair of the Portland Democratic City Committee to focus on my growing family. Today, I’m happy to announce that we have elected our new chair: Steve Lovejoy!
Congratulations to Steve, and thank you to all who came out to last week’s meeting for the election. I’m thrilled to be passing the reins to Steve, a former state representative and long-time Portland Democrat who I’m confident will do a great job as chair. His term will last until December 2020, so I wish him the best of luck and am looking forward to working with him and our fellow Democrats throughout the primaries and general election.
I’d also like to thank each and every one of you for your great work over the past year. Because of your donations and volunteer efforts, we had huge successes in the 2018 elections. Governor Mills has signed many important pieces of legislation that were blocked by Governor LePage, from implementing our state’s voter-approved marijuana law, to expanding Medicaid, to adopting automatic voter registration.
Let’s continue that momentum to 2020, when we’ll finally be able to defeat Susan Collins — the last Republican in Maine’s Congressional delegation — who has consistently obeyed Trump and his awful agenda. We’ll also end the Trump Administration itself, by unifying around and electing whoever wins the Democratic nomination for president. We’ve got our work cut out for us!
As I said, while I’m no longer chair, I’m still a Portland Democrat, and will still be politically active in our amazing city. I look forward to seeing you all around, including at future PDCC meetings.
Onward,
Sam Tracy
Former PDCC Chair (August 2018 – July 2019)
