As I mentioned in my last post, the PDCC has some important news: our vice-chair Elizabeth Murphy had to step down from her position for personal reasons earlier this month, and unfortunately I also need to step down from my position as chair (effective in July).
This is unfortunate news in the short-term, but provides some great opportunities for regular members, long-time listserv readers, or relative new-comers to step up and get involved in a big way. I’ve really enjoyed my time with the Portland Democrats and plan to stay in touch to ease the transition, and hope to remain involved as a regular member as my schedule allows. Our elected Treasurer & Secretary will also be continuing on.
We will not hold a meeting in June, and will then be holding elections for these officer positions at our meeting on Thursday, July 11.
If you would like to run for either position, or just want to learn more, please feel free to contact me directly. Any registered Democrat in Portland is eligible, and you can nominate yourself or others. Those who accept nominations will submit candidate statements, which will be emailed out before the July meeting. At that meeting, we will have the opportunity for Q & A with all candidates, and the membership will then vote to elect the new chair and vice-chair.
I will send out multiple reminders, but please start thinking about whether this opportunity is right for you or someone you know. We’re a small organization with huge potential and an important role in our city’s politics. With both President Trump & Senator Collins up for re-election in 2020, whoever steps up to serve the PDCC will have the opportunity to make a difference in Portland, Maine, and the entire country.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Sincerely,
Sam Tracy
Chair, Portland Democratic City Committee
